In one of the Kampala divisions where we planted an air quality monitor ( An initiative that is going on by Public Square EA under the #EmpewoBweBulamu project in partnership with University of Wisconsin, New York University ,Abu dhabi with Melina Platas and supported by Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago (EPIC) as coordinated by Dorothy Lsoto, we chose a compound in a slum in Kitintale, Nakawa division.
I've been doing these AQ conversations for a long time now, but this one was profoundly different. I sat down with Gabriel (8), Shalom (3), and Mary (12), and I was left in absolute awe!!
The quality of the conversation, the level of understanding, the raw curiosity in their questions, it was all mind blowing. They pressed me: "Why was our compound chosen?"
But the moment that truly broke through was their collective thought: "Can we also call our friends at school to see it, we will explain to them all we talked about?" The immensity of joy I felt in that moment is inexpressible.
They weren't just curious; they were already willing to become Air quality advocates, eager to explain to their friends why it's so important to measure the air they breathe.
It’s clear now: it's time to drop the tag of simply 'running' these projects for the children. It's time to empower them. It's time to light their candles. They don't just deserve clean air; they are ready to lead the change for it.
